STOP all BLOOD THINNERS

Pre-operative Surgical Shower Instructions:
Before Surgery, you can play an important role in reducing your risk of infection at the surgical site by decreasing the number of germs on your skin. Prior to your surgery, you should plan on showering or take a bath the night before surgery and the morning of surgery.
You should use an antibacterial soap (like Dial® in a body wash, liquid soap or open a new bar of soap) or an antibacterial solution (i.e. Hibiclens) to scrub the area where surgery will be performed. This is intended to limit the growth of germs which may be present on your skin.
The Evening Prior to Surgery
Refrain from smoking cigarettes, using tobacco products or drinking alcohol for 12 hours prior to surgery. Have a light meal for dinner (easily digestible).
DO NOT eat any food, chew any gum, or drink any liquids after MIDNIGHT, the night before your surgery, unless advised otherwise by your anesthesia provider.
Shower the night before surgery with an antibacterial soap listed above or with an antibacterial solution (i.e. Hibiclens) that can be purchased at your local pharmacy.
- Special cleaning attention should be given to the surgical site, the axilla (arm pits), under the breasts or folds in the skin, and the groin area. (do not use Hibiclens in the groin area)
- During your shower, you should scrub your skin in the area where your surgery will be. You should scrub the area for approximately three (3) minutes.
- Please remember to wear clean clothing / pajamas after your shower.
- Also remember to change your bed linens the night before your surgery as well.
- Do not sleep with your pets after you have performed your pre-surgical shower.
Follow these simple guidelines the MORNING BEFORE SURGERY:
Please only take medications as instructed by your doctor or anesthesia provider with a SIP OF WATER (2-4 ounces). You may brush your teeth but spit out all liquids.
The morning of your surgery, you should also take another shower using the same instructions as above.
- Remember to shower early enough that your hair should be dry before your scheduled surgery time.
- Please also avoid using body emollients, oils, creams, deodorant, make-up, and lotions after washing and using your skin prep. Some products may decrease the effects of your antibacterial soap and shower.
Remove all Jewelry and leave all valuables at home.
Please bring your identification, insurance card, and your form of payment with you. If you are over the age of 18 it is required that you bring your identification at the time of registration.
Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing. You may have a brace, splint, or bandage that may make it difficult to wear form-fitting clothing. Loose, button-up shirts are recommended for shoulder and elbow surgery. You may wear underwear and socks during the procedure unless contraindicated for your surgery.
If you need glasses or contacts, please bring them with the cases. You will be asked to remove them prior to surgery.
For CHILDREN having surgery, you may bring a few comfort items from home such as a blanket, toy or a sippy cup
Nasal Decolonization:
To help reduce your surgical site infection risk a nasal decolonization will be done during the preoperative admission. Your nurse will ask you to blow your nose and then apply a betadine solution swab to both of your nostrils (inside the nares) the procedure takes about 1 minute. This is a simple procedure the help reduce harmful bacteria that can colonize in the nose and spread to your surgical site incision.
COVID-19
To reduce the risk of a possible COVID-19 exposure we are limiting the amount of people we allow in the building. If your surgery is under 45 minutes only one responsible adult is permitted in the center. (Exceptions: patients age 17 and younger, patients requiring special needs or an additional caretaker) Wearing a mask is required by both the patient and the responsible adult.
The patient and their responsible adult (if the responsible adult is entering the facility) will be screened for COVID-19 on the date of service at the registration desk. The screening will consist of a series of questions and a temperature check.
